On the night of 30 April 2008, fourteen people in various states of intoxication boarded a working boat from a wharf in East Balmain to travel to Watson’s Bay. The boat was licensed to carry eight people. Matthew Reynolds had access to the work boat for work purposes – it was not made available to him for his own purposes. Reynolds had been in charge of navigating and steering the boat until just before the accident, when Percy Small took over. The boat crashed into another boat travelling in the opposite direction, just off Bradley’s Head as they were returning to East Balmain. Neither Percy Small or Matthew Reynolds intended for the boat carrying the twelve friends to crash and neither of them intended for six of them to die. Matthew Reynolds was convicted of six counts of manslaughter. Percy Small was convicted of six counts of dangerous navigation causing death.
