Content

What information is available on the internet?

Currency

How old is the information? Check that the information is dated, updated and regularly reviewed.

Bias

Is a balanced approach taken? Are a range of options and views presented? For example, different types of treatment. A bias may be acceptable if obviously stated and inherent in the nature of the site. If the author has a particular focus and consequently certain aspects have been omitted, then this also needs to be made clear.

References

Is there a list of references at the end of each article showing that the author has researched the topic? References need to be included if appropriate to the sources used. References may not be necessary if the website is developed by a reputable organisation or group.

Relevance

Is the language appropriate to the audience? For example, plain English explanations for people without medical qualifications. Complex medical information may be appropriate if relevant to the audience or if no other information is available.

Disclaimer

It is standard practice to have a disclaimer. The disclaimer often points out the distinction between information and advice.
